Through the great work of Alpaca Breeder’s Fiber School owner, Diana Timmerman, we are able to provide another outstanding educational opportunity for camelid breeders – right here in central Pennsylvania! Breeders from across the country are welcome to attend this course taught by preeminent camelid veterinarian, Dr. LaRue Johnson.

LaRue Johnson, BS, DVM, PhD - You'd be hard pressed to mention Dr. Johnson’s name around most alpaca folks and not see a smile come across their face. He's considered an icon in the industry and an all around humorous guy. Don't misunderstand ... he has DECADES of experience with all things camelid. But his approach to teaching the birthing of alpacas is done in a way that makes learning from him fun.
LaRue has an extensive and varied background that included travel and instruction throughout the world. In 2002, he retired as a Full Professor from Colorado State University. His professional honors have had him serving on numerous Boards of Directors including such things as being President of the Board of the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners. In 1997, LaRue was made a Delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association. LaRue has raised sheep, goats, llamas and alpacas for a total of 40 years. He is a member of the Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies and the Rocky Mountain Llama Association.
Dr. LaRue Johnson has presented neonatal clinics for camelid owners and vets more than 100 times across the USA, Canada, Australia, England and South America. You will enjoy yourself at this course. And you WILL go home equipped with knowledge to handle most any birthing issue that arises on your farm.

This is an essential course for every breeder. It includes both lecture and lab. You will learn:
- reproductive anatomy and physiology;
- breeding and pregnancy diagnosis options;
- gestational development;
- care of the pregnant dam;
- normal and abnormal criation;
- care of the newborn as well as the high risk cria.
The course lab will give you hands-on delivery practice that will challenge registrants to diagnose the presentation of the cria, discuss a delivery plan and deliver the cria. The cost of the course is $250 per student.
